Getting Started on the Pune Metro
The Pune Metro is the fastest and most affordable way to get around Pune. The network covers 33 stations across 2 lines and 33.2 km of track, connecting the city's key neighbourhoods, transport hubs, and attractions. Around ~250,000 journeys are made every day.
Pune Metro is the rapid transit system serving Maharashtra's second-largest city — also known as the "Oxford of the East" for its many universities and educational institutions. Commercial operations began on 6 March 2022, and the network is rapidly expanding with Phase 1 and Phase 2 corridors.

Getting from the Airport to Pune
Pune Metro does not yet serve PNQ Airport — current options include pre-paid taxis, Ola/Uber, and the planned metro extension. Journey time: ~30–40 min by taxi to central Pune metro stations. Estimated fare: ₹200–₹500 taxi/cab to metro area.

Essential Tips for Visitors
- Baggage X-ray at every station — all bags are scanned at the security checkpoint before entry. Allow 2–3 extra minutes at busy stations.
- Women-only coaches — the first coach of every train is reserved for women. Clearly marked. Male passengers should use other coaches.
- Peak hours are very crowded — avoid 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00 on weekdays if you can. Trains run reliably but are packed during rush hours.
- Smart Card is essential — buy it on your first visit. The discount and time saving pay back the deposit within a day of travel. Available at any station customer care centre.
- Download the operator app — fare calculators, UPI ticketing, and route planners are available from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.
- Operating hours — the metro runs approximately 06:00 to 22:00–23:00. Always check the last train time if travelling late.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pune Metro go to Hinjewadi IT Park?
Not yet — the Phase 2 extension of Line 1 to Hinjewadi IT Park (via Baner and Balewadi) is under construction. Once open, it will directly connect Pune's largest IT hub to the city centre. Currently, buses and cabs are the only option for Hinjewadi.
Does Pune Metro connect to Pune Railway Station?
Shivajinagar metro station is the closest to Pune Railway Station — about 1.5 km walk or a short auto ride. The proposed Phase 2 includes a station closer to the main railway station.
What time does Pune Metro run?
Approximately 06:00 to 22:00 daily. Last trains depart end stations around 21:30. PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal) buses cover the city at other hours.
Does the metro go to Koregaon Park?
Koregaon Park (Pune's most vibrant restaurant and cafe zone) is closest to the Ramwadi station area on the Aqua Line. A short auto ride from Ramwadi or Kalyani Nagar station reaches Koregaon Park.
Is Pune Metro useful for visitors?
For getting around central Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, yes. For areas like Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Viman Nagar (near the airport), or Baner in full, you'll still need autos or cabs. The network is expanding rapidly.
