Kochi Metro is the rapid transit system serving Kerala's commercial capital and one of the fastest-growing cities in South India. Opened on 17 June 2017, it operates 25 stations across a single line (Blue Line) and 27.7 km of elevated track.
The metro is operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Kerala. Kochi Metro is notable for several progressive milestones: it is the first metro in India to employ members of the transgender community in customer service roles (a landmark inclusion initiative) and was the first metro in India to be fully solar-powered in its commercial operations.
The Blue Line runs from Aluva in the north to Tripunithura in the south, passing through major hubs including Edapally (connectivity to NH 66), Lissie, and MG Road — the commercial heart of Kochi. An extension to Kakkanad (the IT corridor) is under construction.
The Kochi1 card is the integrated multi-mode smart card — working not just on the metro but also on KSRTC buses, local KMRL water metro, autorickshaws, and select merchants. This makes Kochi1 one of the most versatile transit cards in India.
The Water Metro — a unique network of electric ferries connecting the islands and shores of Kochi backwaters — is also operated by KMRL and uses the same Kochi1 card, making the combined metro + water metro experience truly distinctive.

Does the Kochi Metro reach Cochin International Airport?
Not directly — Cochin International Airport (COK) is about 25 km from the city and is not on the current metro line. Aluva station (northern terminus) is the nearest metro point, from where taxis/buses serve the airport (about 8 km). The metro extension to the airport has been proposed.

How do I use the Water Metro with the metro?
At Vyttila, Ernakulam South, and other waterfront stations, walk to the KMRL Water Metro terminal. Tap your Kochi1 card on the ferry turnstile as well — the same card covers both. Ferries run every 15–30 minutes to various island and shoreside destinations.
Is Kochi Metro good for tourists?
Yes — Kochi Metro is clean, air-conditioned, and covers the main commercial and business areas. The combination of metro + Water Metro gives excellent coverage of the Kochi metropolitan area. For Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and Cherai Beach, you'll need ferries or taxis after the metro.
