A ride on the New York City Subway costs a flat $3.00, however far you travel and whatever the time of day. The same fare applies on local buses, and a transfer between the subway and a local bus within two hours is free.
Pay with OMNY by tapping a contactless bank card, a phone or watch, or a reusable OMNY card at the turnstile. OMNY caps your spending at $35 in any seven-day period, so frequent riders automatically get unlimited travel once they reach it. The MetroCard was retired at the end of 2025.

Is the seven-day cap worth it for visitors?
You do not need to buy anything to get the cap: it happens automatically. At $3.00 a ride, the cap kicks in on your twelfth ride within seven days. A visitor riding three or four times a day reaches it by the third or fourth day, and every ride after that is free until the seven days are up.
For a weekend trip with only a handful of rides, you simply pay $3.00 each time.
