Ahmedabad Metro is the rapid transit system serving Gujarat's largest city and one of India's most vibrant commercial centres. Phase 1 opened on 6 March 2019, and the network now operates 45 stations across 2 lines covering 40.3 km.
The metro is operated by MEGA (Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad), a special purpose vehicle of the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. MEGA operates both the metro and the upcoming Gandhinagar extension, connecting two of Gujarat's most important cities.
Line 1 (East-West Corridor, Blue Line) runs from Vastral Gam in the east to Thaltej Gam in the west, passing through Ahmedabad's commercial heart. Line 2 (North-South Corridor, Red Line) runs from Gujarat University to APMC via Kalupur Railway Station — making it directly useful for arriving rail passengers at Ahmedabad Junction.
Ahmedabad is the gateway city for the Rann of Kutch, Somnath, Dwarka, and various UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Gujarat. The metro connects the city's commercial areas, old city (heritage walled city of Ahmedabad — a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the major transport hubs.
Phase 2 extension to Gandhinagar (Gujarat's capital, 25 km from Ahmedabad) is under construction and will create a remarkable inter-city metro connecting two state capitals.

How do I get to Ahmedabad Junction (railway station) by metro?
Take the Red Line to Kalupur Railway Station — the metro station is directly connected to Ahmedabad Junction, one of India's busiest railway stations. Ideal for travellers arriving by train from Mumbai, Delhi, or other cities.
Does the metro go to the old walled city of Ahmedabad?
Kalupur station (Red Line) is on the edge of the heritage walled city — a short auto or walk from the Bhadra Fort, Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, and the old city bazaars. The entire old city UNESCO World Heritage area is accessible from Kalupur.
What time does Ahmedabad Metro run?
Approximately 06:00 to 22:30. Trains run every 8–12 minutes at peak times. AMTS city buses cover the city at other hours.
Does the metro go to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport?
Not directly — the airport is not on the current metro map. Phase 2 and future extensions may cover the airport area. Currently, auto-rickshaws and cabs connect the airport to metro stations.
What is the Gandhinagar extension?
The Phase 2 Gandhinagar extension will take the metro 25 km further north from the current terminus to Gandhinagar — Gujarat's capital. This will be India's first inter-city metro connection between two state capital cities. Construction is ongoing.
Is the BRTS (bus rapid transit) connected to the metro?
Ahmedabad's AMTS/BRTS bus system has interchange points with the metro at several stations. The BRTS (Janmarg) covers corridors the metro does not yet serve. Both systems use different payment but connect well at key stations.
